The Wild Buggers beach buggy club Cape Town family recently packed up their beach buggies and air-cooled VWs for a weekend that proved two things: we love our cars, and we attract truly weird levels of spontaneous, absolute fun. We’ve got the pictures to prove it, and if you weren’t there, you missed a classic club camp for the ages!
Adventure and Chaos: Our VW Family Club Camp Highlights

Life at a Wild Buggers event is never quiet. Before the engines even cooled, we had high-stakes competition—like Anthony winning the intense balloon-popping brawl—and the sight of our paramedic Ellie scoring a magnificent prize of wine. (Essential medicine, we hear, for dealing with us old school VW enthusiasts!)
But the real drama came from the tiny, underground members of the animal kingdom. The entire VW Family witnessed Ellie befriend a wild mole, only for the little digger to vanish! Suddenly, we had a four-person search party—Ellie, Rhoodie, Sandra, and Yolande—performing a frantic, full-scale mole hunt. That’s commitment, folks! Meanwhile, Clive and Nick were focused on different digging, giving our trusty Baja Bug, ‘Dark Side,’ some essential attention. It’s all part of the VW Bug life!
Gravel Roads and the Ultimate Kuierspot
Once the mechanics were sorted, we hit the road in our beautiful VW classics. We quickly discovered that even the mighty Taal Monument couldn’t handle the sight of us, forcing the whole convoy of VW Air cooled vehicles to execute a legendary, unplanned U-turn when the gate was locked!
The real fun began when we hit the gravel road to Paarl Berg. We found a stunning waterfall (perfect for a distant, natural VW Air cooled vehicle wash!) and decided that spot was too good to leave. We set up the ultimate roadside sundowner kuierspot right then and there. We were having such absolute fun that we accidentally became an impromptu cheering squad, clapping and whooping for every bewildered jogger who ran past our line of beach buggies. The only thing quieter than the old school VW engines at that moment was the lone fly-fisherman in the river—we hope he got something!
Fire, Food, and The Reluctant Goodbye
The evenings at the club camp were all about the braai. Our master fire builders put together blazes so expertly stacked, they deserved an engineering award. We moved from perfectly cooked meat to the serious business of marshmallow roasting at the kuierspot.
Unfortunately, even the best weekends have an A-frame of sadness waiting. Sunday morning was filled with the sounds of reluctant goodbyes and club members like Rhoodie, Jacques, Brent, and Anton Horn trying to stretch breakfast into next week. We eventually had to watch Chris load his beach buggy for the tow home. It’s tough to leave the VW Family!
