Convoy Kick-off at Groot Phesantekraal

The day started at Groot Phesantekraal View in Durbanville, where The Wild Buggers gathered for our briefing. We had a massive variety of VW air-cooled metal lined up. From pristine classic VW Beetle models to rugged Baja Bug builds. The lineup was world-class, featuring everything from “The Wasp” (Brent & Sam’s orange Salamander with its 1600 VW Beetle motor) to “The BumbleBee” (Anthony & Michelle’s yellow beach buggy also with a 1600 VW Beetle motor). We even had a few unique builds like a Kestrel KartKraft with a wooden rear deck and a red machine with a non-traditional front radiator.

A massive shoutout to Ralph from Johannesburg! When he heard my beach buggy, Shrek, blew a tophead gasket, he trailered “Roxanne”—a fuel-injected 1800 Golf-powered beauty—all the way down just so I’d have a ride for the run. That is the true spirit of this club! Meanwhile, Gerrit Pienaar played it safe; he left his classic VW Beetle at home to keep it dry and joined us in his modern Beetle instead. When I told him we didn’t even have roofs on our buggies, he offered me an umbrella!

Making a Difference at Goue Aar

Our charity run mission was visiting the Goue Aar Old Age Home in Malmesbury. Thanks to our members and the Bok Radio HOOP Project, we delivered over R10,000 in bulk food, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. The “Ladybugs” were the stars of the show, donning official club shirts and prepping a massive braai lunch with fresh pasta salad and boerewors.

Each resident received a personalized gift box made and donated by Saint and Bloom Gifting featuring a Table Mountain sunset, and we even made sure the hardworking staff got special gift packs and gingerbread houses. Because of the cold, wet weather, we decided not to take the residents for a spin in the buggies—we didn’t want anyone getting sick!

Roadside Rescue in a Malmesbury Downpour

This charity run wouldn’t be complete without a bit of drama. The trip home was where the real adventure started. Anthony’s yellow beach buggy needed a roadside breather just as the sky opened up. While some of us stayed dry in Mickey’s “Dark Side” Baja Bug, the manne got stuck in. Despite the rain, the team huddled around the engine and got the buggy firing again. It was a wet, cold, but successful end to a day that proved The Wild Buggers never leave a mate behind. We eventually thawed out with a great meal at Bossa Phesantekraal, celebrating another win for the air-cooled community.

Neither rain nor a breakdown can stop us! The team huddled around to get this yellow beach buggy back on the road despite the sudden Malmesbury downpour. Watching the manne work on a hot VW air-cooled motor in a downpour was a sight to behold.

Whether it’s a classic VW air-cooled machine or a custom beach buggy, the spirit is all about fellowship.
