The Wild Buggers recently took to the coast for our latest adventure, and if you weren’t there, your ride is probably leaking oil out of pure FOMO. It was one of those legendary Cape Town days where the wind decided to take a holiday, leaving us with nothing but blue skies, roaring engines, and the unmistakable smell of Beach Buggy power mixed with braai salt.

There is truly nothing like the feeling of a classic cruise when the conditions are this perfect. From the first turn of the key at our Bothasig meeting point to the final ember of the braai fire, the energy was electric. We didn’t just drive to Eerste Steen; we took over the coastline with style, humor, and a little bit of mechanical consultation along the way!

The Bothasig Kickoff: Caffeine and Custom Beach Buggy Decals

The Wild Buggers gathered at the Eerste Steen braai spot; Beach Buggy and old school VW fleet parked with Table Mountain visible in the distance.
Another angle of a perfect day! Sun is shining on our Wild Buggers crew enjoying the braai area. Our old school VW and Beach Buggy fleet is safely parked, with that breathtaking Table Mountain view serving as the best backdrop in the world.

Our morning started at the Bothasig meeting point, where the fleet gathered to wake up the neighborhood. The parking lot was a sea of chrome and fiberglass, showcasing the very best of the Beach Buggy lifestyle and that classic old school VW charm we all love.

Walking through the lineup, it was clear that our members have a sense of humor as loud as their exhausts. We spotted everything from “The Beast” sticker on Chris’s ride to a tiny, adorable bee on Pap Nat. Anton’s buggy, “Shrek,” even featured a Grinch on the bonnet—though with weather this good, even the Grinch was smiling.

The Cruise: VW Air-Cooled Power on Parade

Once the engines were warmed up, the convoy roared to life. There is truly nothing like the synchronized hum of a Beach Buggy fleet hitting the open road. We cruised toward Eerste Steen with Table Mountain standing tall in the rearview and the Atlantic Ocean beckoning from the side.

While the purists enjoyed that iconic air-cooled “chug,” Rhoodie’s water-cooled conversion kept everyone on their toes—proving that in the Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club, as long as it has the heart of a classic old school VW or a modern motor, you are part of the family..

“Nou Gaan Ons Braai”: The Ultimate Beachside Reward

Arriving at the Eerste Steen gate, the guards knew the “Weekend Warriors” had arrived. We claimed our spot overlooking a beach that seemed to stretch on for an eternity. If there is one thing Wild Buggers do as well as driving a Beach Buggy, it is eating. As soon as the engines cooled, the fires were lit.

We had so much meat we needed a second grid just to keep up with the demand! Homer took charge of the corn, ensuring every mielie was grilled to perfection. Between bites of steak and boerewors, the crew spent the afternoon troubleshooting Rhoodie’s wheel and simply soaking in the camaraderie that makes this club so special.
