As the sun rose over Plattekloof on December 8th, the Wild Buggers—the most active beach buggy club Cape Town has to offer—gathered for our final official run of 2024. We were buzzing with excitement for a day of scenic drives and great company. Starting at Lovers Lane, the morning had a sobering start as we learned about the ordeal our member Ayesha had faced. Thankfully, she emerged unscathed, and with her car recovered, the club is ready to support the repairs.
Cruising Through Stellenbosch: A Convoy of Buggy Buddies
Despite the rocky beginning, Gary arrived just in time to rally the group with a briefing. Fueled by his enthusiasm—and soon, his legendary bacon and egg breakfast rolls—we set off for the first leg of our journey. Our convoy of buggy buddies hit the road, first stopping outside Stellenbosch for a quick refreshment break.
With bellies satisfied, we cruised through the scenic roads of the winelands. Seeing a line of classic cars and the occasional VW Beetle winding through the mountains is a sight that never gets old. We stretched our legs at the Orchard near Grabouw, indulging in some retail therapy at the local stalls before heading toward the coast.
Coastal Splendor and the Great Phone Chase
The journey continued along the R44 toward Kleinmond. Our luncheon destination, C Shack, welcomed us with sea views and a budget-friendly menu. However, as we prepared to leave, Mickey discovered her phone was missing! This sparked a high-stakes adventure through unfamiliar terrain to track it down. While the chase was tense, the power of our club network meant the phone was safely retrieved the following day.
Back on track with our buggy buddies, the group continued along the spectacular Clarence Drive. This coastal route is the ultimate playground for a VW Beetle or a beach buggy. The dramatic ocean views and winding roads are exactly why we do what we do. We regrouped in Strand for ice cream and coffee, wrapping up the year with a strong sense of camaraderie.

The Christmas Run was a perfect reminder of what makes our club unique: the thrill of the open road and the bond shared by our air-cooled community. We are already gearing up for our first event of 2025! Whether you have a show-winning VW Beetle or a rugged beach buggy, you are invited to join the most active club in the Cape.
