Well, fellow Wild Buggers and VW Family followers, buckle up! Our “Revving Up for the Lens” run was an adventure for the books. You might have seen the awesome photos, but there is always more to the story when the Wild Buggers hit the road in a convoy of air-cooled VW machines!

From Sunny Pitstops to Shivering Shenanigans in our Air-Cooled VWs

A line of air-cooled VW beach buggies parked on Chapman's Peak Drive
Last moments at Red Hill! Cale is busy setting up his camera to grab a final video as we drive past. Once he’s got his shot, he’ll head home, and we Wild Buggers will continue our awesome run. What a fantastic spot for our VW Air Cooled Vehicles!

The day started with a bit of a curveball. My fantastic partner, Mickey, who is usually my trusty navigator, was feeling under the weather. I had a secret plan: politely “suggest” that Brent, with his legendary local knowledge, take the lead. He just didn’t know it yet!

Our initial pitstops were buzzing with excitement. We had a magnificent line of colourful VW classics and buggies, engines gleaming and the ocean sparkling in the background. It was a truly glorious sight for any air-cooled VW enthusiast. Ibrahim’s blue Beamish beach buggy, featuring a serious 1835cc motor from Beetle Mania, certainly turned heads.

However, the Cape Town weather had other plans. At a pitstop just before the heavens opened, a few shivering members decided to head for home. It is all part of the air-cooled VW life! Sometimes, discretion is the better part of valour—especially when it comes to keeping your seats dry.

The Great Carburetor Conundrum: Roadside Air-Cooled VW Repairs

As the first drops fell, we made a dash for Dixie’s Restaurant to get under cover. By the time we had finished our grub, the sun popped back out. It was perfect timing, even if it meant a few extra impromptu pitstops.

Speaking of stops, we had a classic Wild Buggers moment when “The Wasp,” Brent and Sam’s orange VW Salamander beach buggy, started acting up. It was a carburettor conundrum! What started as a quick peek turned into a full-on gathering. Anthony worked his magic on the carb while everyone offered “expert” advice. It was a true testament to our club camaraderie—when one air-cooled VW needs love, the whole gang is there to lend a hand.

Chapman’s Peak Charm and a Famous Herbie 53 VW Beetle

Brent’s route was absolutely spectacular. We cruised along Chapman’s Peak, taking in those breathtaking ocean and mountain views that look best from the seat of a beach buggy. Nolan and Rory’s buggies looked incredible against that backdrop.

The highlight for many was spotting a complete Herbie 53 look-alike, with the owner even rocking a matching Herbie jacket! It’s moments like these that make our runs unforgettable, showcasing the sheer love for every air-cooled VW in all its glory.
