Love in the Spotlight: The 2026 Valentine’s Run Recovery Saga
The 2026 Valentine’s Run wasn’t just a drive; it was a high-stakes movie game and a masterclass in Beach Buggy Club brotherhood. If you missed it, you missed an absolute jol of epic proportions. Whether you drive a VW air-cooled classic or a modern conversion, this run showed exactly what the Wild Buggers are all about.
Muffins, Movie Stars, and Mystery Envelopes
The day kicked off at Brent and Sam’s house with coffee, muffins, and the official handover of the goodie bags. Inside were the rules of “Love in the Spotlight.” Every couple was assigned a movie persona—even the dog! From that moment on, real names were banned. To raise the stakes, the Beach Buggy Club matched a generous donation from Brent and Sam to create a R2000 prize pot. As our VW classics hit the road, the “Who has the money?” hunt was in full swing.
Clarence Drive and the Bumblebee Breakdown
We cruised the iconic Clarence Drive (R44), a dream road for any air-cooled VW. But as our convoy of old school VW machines pushed through the mountain passes toward Kleinmond, “Bumblebee” decided to call it quits.
The manne put their heads together, proving that when you’re in a Beach Buggy Club, you never solve a problem alone. After towing her to Kleinmond, we found ST Motors. While our Ladybugs chilled on the lawn, the mechanic found a busted rotor. One quick replacement later, and this VW air-cooled beauty was purring like a dream again! This is also where Leon Wagenaar joined the convoy in his stunning black VW air-cooled Beamish.

A Scenic Stroll through Hermanus
Parking a beach buggy convoy in Hermanus is no easy feat. After dropping the ladies off, the crew scouted for spots for their VW classics. The walk back was a scenic bonus, taking us past the historic 6-pounder naval guns at the Old Harbour and the iconic tidal pools.

We finally regrouped at Fusion Restaurant on the Village Square. Overlooking Walker Bay, we enjoyed a world-class meal before the big reveal: Brent was crowned the winner! In a true act of Beach Buggy Club gees, Brent donated his R2000 prize to our upcoming charity run for the seniors at Badisa Goue Aar Tehuis.
Shrek’s “Big Bang” and the Long Way Home
The drama wasn’t over. As I turned the key to leave, “Shrek” let out a massive bang. My buggy’s Nissan water-cooled motor had blown a head gasket. Once again, the Beach Buggy Club stepped up. Leon fetched his A-frame to get Shrek to Kleinmond, and Christopher drove from Cape Town to tow us the rest of the way. While I was on the end of a tow bar, the rest of the old school VW crew headed to Pearly Beach for a legendary sleepover and an encounter with Craig Low and three other Wild Buggers on the drive back the next day.
Whether you’re in a Baja Bug, a custom VW Beetle, or a standard air-cooled VW, the Wild Buggers always make sure everyone gets home.

The fun doesn’t stop here! The money Brent donated is going toward our Charity Run on the 1st of March for the seniors at Badisa Goue Aar Tehuis. Dust off your Baja Bug or VW Beetle and help us make a difference!
