What do you get when you mix a whole lot of air-cooled machines, a touch of golden canola fields, a couple of planes, and a troop of very hungry baboons? You get an unforgettable Wild Buggers adventure, that’s what! As the premier beach buggy club Cape Town enthusiasts join for real adventure, this run had it all!

Canola Fields and Coastal Cruises: A Classic VW Beetle Adventure

The hard part is over! Our VW classics are parked safely, and it’s time for the Wild Buggers crew to go have some fun at the brewery.

Nick and Ellie’s run was a perfect reminder of why our club is truly one of a kind. The day started with our convoy of classics cruising down the open road, with Gerrit Pienaar’s bright orange VW Beetle bringing up the rear. It’s a testament to the fact that you can always find a place in the Wild Buggers crew, no matter which VW Beetle or buggy you drive.

Our first stop at the Stellenbosch Flying Club was a real treat. We saw some incredible machines, but the real star was the old school VW Beetle belonging to Kyle Cato that we found parked there. It just goes to show that our love for the classic VW Beetle is everywhere! While Fabian and Geno were discussing beach buggy spare parts and maintenance, proving the air-cooled talk never stops, the rest of us were admiring the planes.

After a little bit of roadside troubleshooting to sort out a wheel shudder on Chris’s ride, we were all ready for lunch at the historic Botrivier Hotel. After a good feast and some much-needed coffee, we were all recharged and ready to hit the road again in our convoy of VW Beetle classics and buggies.

The grand finale at the Houwhoek Pass lookout point was the cherry on top. We pulled over for a final look at the view and to watch the paragliders take off. It was a beautiful, peaceful moment, until a bunch of unruly baboons decided our cars were a free lunch buffet. They raided our doggie bags and made off with our snacks, but they left us with a story that’s just too good not to tell. This is what it’s all about—the open road, the unexpected adventures, and the VW Beetle friendships that make it all worthwhile.

This is what it’s all about for our VW Family—the open road, the unexpected adventures, and the friendships that make it all worthwhile.
