It all started on the WhatsApp group, buzzing like a VW engine on a downhill stretch—”Can’t wait!” “When are we leaving?!” The anticipation for the Wild Buggers camp at Dwarskersbos was real. When Anthony and Michelle threw down the gauntlet with free skaap tjoppies for Friday night, the deal was sealed. The West Coast VW Adventure was officially on!

Convoy to the Coast: Bumblebees and Roadside Interrogations

We gathered at Bothasig for the Friday departure because there is safety in numbers—and let’s be real, nothing beats the sight of a bunch of buggies cruising together. Anthony’s freshly rebuilt “Bumblebee” was the star of the show, shining and ready for the long road.

The drive wasn’t without its drama—Brent managed to get pulled over by the cops for a confusing towing setup, but we eventually regrouped. We even had a slight mechanical hiccup with Bumblebee’s distributor, but a quick twist and we were back in action. By the time we hit Dwarskersbos, the camp was ready for a legendary night of stories and braaiing under a starry West Coast sky.

Saturday Madness: The Sand Pit of Doom

Saturday kicked off with some early morning tuning from Jess Huggett before we hit the road with “A Bug’s Life” (the local West Coast club). We decided to take on the sandy tracks of Dwarskersbos, which started off firm but quickly turned into a mission. Anthony and Michelle took on some thick sand and—spoiler alert—got properly stuck.

After a Jeep Wrangler came to the rescue, it was my turn in Shrek. I made it past the first trap, but a hill on a slight turn finally claimed me. It was a day of pushing, pulling, and a lot of laughing with our buggy buddies from the coast. We eventually escaped the “pit of doom” and headed to Velddrif for some well-earned blueberry ice cream and a potjiekos feast back at base camp. This is seriously a West Coast VW adventure to be remembered.

Whales, Wildflowers, and the Scenic Way Home

Before packing up on Sunday, we took a stroll to the beach and spotted three whales frolicking in the water—the perfect West Coast scene! Our farewell drive took us through Hermon and Malmesbury, winding through farmlands filled with yellow canola fields as far as the eye could see. It was a magical end to a recharged weekend.

If you missed out on the sand traps and the sheep chops, make sure you don’t miss our next outing. This West Coast VW Adventure proved once again that while the cars bring us together, it’s the people and the “lekker gees” that keep us coming back.
