There is a unique bond between a driver and an air-cooled VW motor. These legendary engines don’t rely on modern radiators or water pumps; instead, they use a heavy-duty oil cooler and a massive fan to push air directly over the cylinders. Because they literally breathe the atmosphere around them, they run beautifully in the crisp, open air of the Atlantic coast. That simple, rugged engineering is exactly why a air-cooled VW convoy of these classic machines is perfect for an western cape road trip adventure.
Recently, the Wild Buggers crew fired up the engines for our highly anticipated West Coast cultural experience Run. We had a brilliant turnout of custom beach buggies and classic VW air-cooled Beetles, all lined up and ready to soak in some beautiful Western Cape scenery.
Exploring San Heritage at !Khwa ttu
Our first major pitstop was at the !Khwa ttu San Heritage Centre, a fantastic destination dedicated to celebrating and preserving the history, language, and culture of the San people. We traded the wind-in-your-hair driving for a fascinating walk through their modern exhibition halls on our !khwa ttu tour.
The museum displays are incredible, showcasing everything from handmade traditional hunting tools to full-scale replicas of ancient grass huts and beautiful historical rock paintings. While some of the crew were admiring the ancient art and others were outdoors making friends with the local horses grazing on the grass, Yolande and Mickey found a quiet spot inside one of the exhibition halls to chat up a storm and share a few laughs. It was a wonderful, relaxed way to experience local heritage together before hitting the tarmac again.
Back on the Asphalt
After stretching our legs and enjoying the indoor museum walk, it was time to head back to our beloved VW babies in the parking lot. The conversation was flowing as everyone walked back to the cars, chatting about the displays and prepping the vehicles for the next leg of the journey.
We fired up the VW air-cooled motors and pointed the convoy back out onto the open road. Bertus took the spot driving right in front of me and keeping a perfectly steady pace as we cruised down the scenic route. Following behind the other cars is always a treat because you get to see all the unique details that members add to their builds. A prime example was Lerene’s beach buggy, which gave me a good chuckle thanks to a classic sticker reading “powered by recycled dinosaurs”—a hilarious nod to our old-school mechanical logic.
A Coastal Feast at Melkbosstrand lunch stop
We wrapped up this epic West Coast cultural experience Run at our final destination, the Seafood Lapa in Melkbosstrand. Pulling up near the ocean after a morning of cruising was the ultimate reward.
As soon as we sat down and looked over the menu, the real chatting started. There is truly nothing better than relaxing by the sea, looking out over the water, and sharing a lekker seafood feast with a big table full of close friends. The atmosphere was full of classic club gees as we swapped stories from the road and laughed over the day’s highlights. It was the perfect ending to an incredibly memorable day out on the Western Cape roads.
