Hello Wild Buggers! It’s time to relive one of our most scenic adventures yet. On May 19th, our convoy of 22 vibrant machines gathered for a journey through the backroads of the Cape. This event was a true celebration of VW classics, and having a racing legend in our midst made it even more special.
Cruising with Legend Jessie Huggett
Our day kicked off at The Wild Bean Café in Pinehurst. The parking lot was humming with energy as members arrived, showcasing their customized rides. It was an honor to have South African motorsport icon Jessie Huggett join the run in his famous Beach Buggy, the “Hugg Bugg.” Having a local celebrity and racing pioneer in our convoy adds a level of prestige to our club that you won’t find anywhere else.
After a quick briefing, we hit the road. It wasn’t long before we had our first “event”—Isabel’s cellphone decided to take a flying leap out of her buggy! Luckily, we regrouped quickly and kept the convoy moving toward the Old Tannery in Wellington. This historic spot was the perfect backdrop for a mid-morning coffee and a tour of a Ford Model T museum, proving that VW classics and automotive history are a match made in heaven.
Beach Buggy Camaraderie and Birthday Surprises
One of the most touching moments of the day happened on the side of the road in Hermon. We pulled over for a surprise birthday celebration for young Delanaux. Seeing the joy on his face as the club presented him with a birthday fund truly encapsulated the spirit of our Beach Buggy community.
For lunch, we headed to Du Vlei Farm Stall. While the kitchen was a bit overwhelmed, the wait gave us plenty of time to swap stories. As the day drew to a close, we had the pleasure of watching Jessie Huggett pilot his Kestrel KartKraft beach buggy back toward home. Seeing a legend like Jessie still so active in the Beach Buggy lifestyle is an inspiration to every member of the Wild Buggers.
