The Wild Buggers VW Family just wrapped up another truly epic Annual Lights For Life Run, and the best part? We found Santa a much-needed upgrade! This event is a pure, fun-filled celebration of customized VW air-cooled vehicles, and the atmosphere was electric. If you missed out on the glowing convoy, grab a coffee and read on—we are about to describe the madness of our favorite old school VW tradition!
A Spectacle of Old School VW Glory and Festive Lights

We had a massive turnout of unique rides and dedicated owners this year. This run isn’t just about the number of cars; it’s about the quality and the character of every old school VW that joins the line. The starting line was packed with every flavor of classic you can imagine, featuring custom Baja Bugs, pristine VW Beetles, and, of course, a strong fleet of our signature Beach Buggies, all trimmed and twinkling with festive lights.
Seeing that line of legendary machines lit up and rumbling through the streets of Cape Town is a sight that never gets old. It is a pure celebration of the passion and engineering that keeps these brilliant air-cooled vehicles on the road.
Shrek’s New Job: Santa Ditches the Reindeer
Every run has its stars, but this year, one star earned a serious promotion! The mighty green Kango Beach Buggy, Shrek, found itself with a new temporary job: Santa’s sleigh! Yes, Santa ditched the reindeer and climbed right into the back of Shrek for the cruise—proving that a well-maintained old school VW is much more reliable than magic.
Other legends on the road included the iconic Herbie VW Beetle (still shining brightly as a proper VW Classic) and Russell’s famous custom Beetle. These cars are a masterclass in custom work and uniqueness, proving you don’t need a showroom polish when you have quality engineering and a bit of character.
Custom Engineering and the Famous Pizza Finale
While most of our drivers stick to the classic setup, the run always attracts a few mad geniuses who like to push the boundaries. We had one incredible blue Beamish Beach Buggy, owned by Johan, that had ditched its traditional engine for a screaming rotary motor! That kind of unexpected custom engineering is what makes our old school VW family so dynamic.
The Lights For Life project is something close to our hearts. Every year, the Lights 4 Life Run proves that the VW family in the Western Cape knows how to pull together for a good cause and a great laugh.
After a successful cruise and the Green Point park-off, the hardcore crew headed for the most important tradition: the pizza run! Shrek (still warm from sleigh duties), Hornet, and Nick’s 53 Beach Buggy drove straight to Bloubergstrand for a well-deserved slice. They kept the lights blazing until the last piece of pepperoni was gone, capping off another perfect night of camaraderie and air-cooled fun.
