The Annual Lights for Life Run lived up to its reputation as one of the most exciting events in the Cape. On November 30th, we gathered at N1 City, admiring the lineup of air-cooled VW classics. As the most active beach buggy club Cape Town has to offer, the turnout of 60 vehicles was a testament to our growing community. It was heartwarming to see so many familiar faces from the air-cooled VW community catching up, sharing laughs, and admiring a lineup that included everything from Jason’s famous Beetle to Johan’s white Baja Bug.
The Cruise Begins: A Glowing Convoy of Buggy Buddies
After a quick briefing, it was time to hit the road. The convoy of lit-up vehicles made its way through Cape Town’s streets, drawing smiles from onlookers. Seeing our buggy buddies and air-cooled legends snaking through the traffic is a sight that never fails to impress.
The cruise was smooth until we hit a snag at Hospital Bend. A reckless driver swerved into Shrek, my green Kango. After a brief but tense “intervention” to document the driver’s details, we pushed on. Despite the chaos, the spirit of the air-cooled VW community stayed strong as we used live locations to regroup at McDonald’s Green Point.
Green Point Park-Off and the Blouberg Finish
We arrived at Green Point just after 9 PM, creating a stunning lineup. The area came alive with enthusiasts from T3 Buslovers, Air-cooled Dub Nation, and South Side Buggers. Whether it was Russell swinging Christmas lights from his Beetle roof or a local policeman stopping by for some “Beetle advice,” it proved that this community connects people from all walks of life.
The final leg took us to the Bloubergstrand beachfront. Opposite News Café, we braved the wind for one last gathering. While most headed home, a dedicated crew of us grabbed pizzas to cap off an incredible evening. It was a long night, but every mile was worth it to see the passion that keeps these cars on the road.
Giving Back: Supporting Bella’s Guardian Angels
The following morning, with Shrek still decked out in lights, Mickey and I delivered the community’s donations to Bella’s Guardian Angels Animal Rescue. Seeing how our collective generosity supports such a worthwhile cause was the perfect ending. This event is a staple for the air-cooled VW community, and we are already counting down to November 29th, 2025!
