This December, the Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club once again showed that our love for buggies is matched only by our care for the community. On Sunday, 15 December, we set out on a very special mission to bring smiles and joy to a small children’s home in Kraaifontein. What followed was a day filled with laughter, surprises, and a reminder of what the holiday season is truly about.
A Story That Touched Our Hearts
This initiative was inspired by Lerene Sadie, a possible new member, who told us about a friend managing a children’s home in Kraaifontein. The home currently cares for seven children who have faced unimaginable hardships—some of them, heartbreakingly, were abandoned as infants and found in drums. Despite their challenges, these kids are a testament to resilience, thanks to the dedicated care they receive.
We decided to rally our Wild Buggers community for a cause close to our hearts: spreading holiday cheer to those who need it most.
A Festive Wild Buggers Parade
On the day of the run, we arrived with two Beach Buggies, Father Christmas, one of his elves, and two trusty sidekicks. Each buggy was packed with gifts, goodies, and a spirit of celebration.
The highlight of the day? Joy rides around the block in our buggies!
For most of the kids, it was an absolute thrill. But little Damian, aged four, wasn’t so sure. He burst into tears as soon as he was placed in a buggy, worried we might take him away. One of the caregivers climbed into the buggy with him, reassuring him he was safe. By the end of the ride, Damian was smiling—a small moment that reminded us how precious trust and care are to these children. Very sad, he thought we were going to take him away.
The Magic of Giving
After the rides, it was time for presents! Each child received carefully chosen gifts, their names written on tags by Father Christmas himself (played brilliantly by Harry). The excitement and pure joy on their faces as they unwrapped their gifts was priceless. From new clothes to plastic scooters and bags of sweets, every item was received with heartfelt gratitude.
This wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of our members. Special thanks go to Marius, Michelle, Lerene, and Harry for ensuring every child felt seen and celebrated. The day was a perfect blend of fun and meaning, and the children’s smiles are something we’ll treasure forever.
A Reality Check
While the children’s home struggles financially, it’s clear that the caregivers are doing their absolute best. The kids are well-mannered, happy, and deeply loved. It’s a reminder that even in the toughest circumstances, kindness and dedication can make a world of difference.
