Gear up, Buggers fam! Buckle up for a story that’s got sunshine, good deeds, and enough laughs to fill a beach buggy. Our 14th of April charity run to Huis Uitsig was a legendary day, filled with heartwarming moments and memories that’ll last a lifetime.

The adventure began at the Durbanville Engen garage. 25 buggies rolled in, most overflowing with donations for the folks at Huis Uitsig. Ismail, our resident super-organizer, pulled up with a trailer stacked high with goodies – what a legend! But before we hit the gas, a curveball was thrown our way. Huis Uitsig called Michelle in a panic – a water pipe burst, leaving the old age home high and dry! Talk about thinking on your wheels! Michelle and Tony zipped off to a water shop, returning with a bounty of 25 x 5-liter bottles to quench the thirst. Now that’s what I call going the extra mile!

A slight detour was needed to make up for lost time, but hey, who needs a scenic route when you can cruise through Durbanville in a parade of awesome buggies? We made a pitstop on Lover’s Lane, soaking up the view and catching up with the crew. It was a sight to behold – buggies gleaming in the sun, good vibes radiating from every chrome bumper.

Pulling into Huis Uitsig, we caused a traffic jam of the best kind! Phones flew out to capture the spectacle. Inside, the braai was sizzling, tables were groaning with treats, and Jou Stasie was pumping out the tunes. The 220 residents watched in amazement, their faces lighting up with pure joy. This was about to be a feel-good fiesta for everyone!

Tony, our resident games guru, brought along a treasure trove of fun – cornhole, golf, bowls, you name it! He even ended up donating most of the games to the home, spreading the fun long after we left. Ismail, the undisputed dominoes champ, got a hilarious reality check when a 77-year-old “oom” schooled him twice! Let’s just say, there’s always someone faster on the draw.

After refreshments and some serious fruit-parcel appreciation (seriously, the joy on their faces was priceless!), it was time for the main event – beach buggy rides! Now, wrangling 220 excited residents wasn’t a walk in the park. Helping them climb in, hoisting some folks up – it was a full-body workout, but the smiles on their faces made it all worthwhile. Sharing stories, reliving memories, and creating new ones – that’s what the Wild Buggers are all about.

Gary Fleming of Jou Stasie kept the party pumping with live music in between interviews. Then came the cherry on top – a surprise performance by the legendary Tommy Dell and Vos Reyneke! Here’s a fact to blow your mind: Tommy Dell is 82 years old and still belts out tunes like nobody’s business! The dance floor erupted, with folks in wheelchairs and Zimmer frames joining the fun. It was a heartwarming and hilarious sight that perfectly captured the spirit of the day.

By the time the “braai” was declared “klaar”, the aroma of sizzling boerewors rolls and smoor filled the air. Let’s just say there were no complaints about the grub! Bellies full and spirits high, some folks drifted off for their afternoon naps, while others lingered, reminiscing about the day’s events. We suspect a few of those folks might have been the lively characters from the smoker’s corner back in their day!

As the sun began to set, it was time to pack up. We left with hearts full of joy and the satisfaction of knowing we’d made a difference. A huge shout-out to everyone who made this day possible – from Michelle & Antony’s tireless organizing to Ismail’s donation magic, Yolandie’s smoor mastery, Landria’s sausage wrangling, Gary’s musical mayhem, and of course, all the generous donors from inside and outside the club. Thanks to Tony for the games donation, Tommy Dell and Vos Reinecke for the epic performance, Jou Stasie for keeping the vibes flowing, Cody and Naz for setting the stage, and all 25 Wild Buggers who brought their awesome buggies along for the ride. And a special thanks to Bothasig Spar for chipping in with the rolls!

This, my friends, is what the Wild Buggers are all about – community, fun, and giving back in the best way we know how. Mark your calendars, because on the 19th of May, we’re gearing up for another unforgettable adventure. Stay tuned for details, and in the meantime, keep the rubber side down and the good times rollin’!

Until next time, Wild Buggers family!
