Camping and Convoy Life: The Bergriver Resort VW Air-Cooled Weekend
Camping and Beach Buggies—is there a better combination? Our weekend at the Bergriver Resort was a total escape into nature. We swapped the sound of traffic for the sound of the river and the crackle of a braai fire. This gallery shows the campsite lined with our favorite VW air cooled builds and the VW Family enjoying a weekend of resting and chatting. These camps are the soul of the club. Look through the memories and then join us for our next day-trip.
When I rolled into the Bergriver Resort camp, the place was already running like a well-oiled machine. Nick, Clive, and Thys were totally set up and already in camping mode. And yes, if you look closely, you’ll see they don’t exactly sleep under the stars! Three Motorhomes! Talk about travelling in comfort! It was clear these three were serious about their kuierspot time, ready to enjoy the weekend with their awesome beach buggies and old-school VWs parked right outside their luxury pads. Clearly, they’ve perfected the art of mixing VW classics with five-star sleeping arrangements. We had barely even started setting up our tents and they were already telling stories around a pretend fire.Forget the roar of the air-cooled VWs—this was the real event of the morning! We were getting ready to fire up the braai when a little traffic jam waddled right past the best VW kuierspot in the Cape. Look at this VW Family of the feather variety, a mother duck and her convoy of little ones, heading straight for the river. It just goes to show you what kind of natural beauty (and tiny pedestrians) we get to enjoy when the Wild Buggers set up camp. Even the wildlife at Bergriver Resort knows where the party is!Wait, what is that? The moment Anthony and Jacques spotted Rhoodie’s engine bay! Rhoodie, you sly dog, you swapped the proper air-cooled VW engine for a water-cooled Golf motor in your beach buggy! There was an immediate huddle around the engine, with lots of head-scratching and friendly debate. We love our VW classics, VW Beetles, and old-school VWs, but the Wild Buggers always appreciate a good, unexpected modification. It certainly gave us something to talk about around the kuierspot! It’s all part of the fun of the VW Family and seeing what crazy stuff people do to their rides. This is what it’s all about! As the sun dipped down at Bergriver Resort camp, it was time for some serious relaxation. Here’s Anthony, Brent, and Jacques, enjoying the perfect early evening vibe, sharing stories and laughs around the warmth of the kampvuurtjie. No VW air-cooled vehicles to tinker with, no Baja Bugs to polish—just pure VW Family time. This kuierspot truly brought out the best in the Wild Buggers. These are the moments we live for at our club camp!Much, much later… and guess what? These three legends—Anthony, Brent, and Jacques—are still at it! The fire is down to embers, the beach buggies are tucked in, and it’s properly dark, but the stories and laughs of the VW Family are still flowing. This is the real essence of the Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club: turning a simple club camp into an all-night catch-up session around the best VW kuierspot in the Cape. You can’t beat the friendships forged around an old-school VW event! The morning after! The Wild Buggers camp comes alive with the sun shining on these incredible machines. Just look at this line-up of beach buggies, Baja Bugs, and other stunning VW air-cooled vehicles! They might have been quiet overnight, but they’re ready to hit the road for the Sunday drive. This is proof that the VW Family brings the best rolling art to any club camp. Which of these old-school VWs would you take for a spin?Forget big 4x4s, this is how the Wild Buggers roll! Here’s Brent’s awesome orange buggy, The Wasp, proving that these VW air-cooled vehicles are not just for showing off. He’s got his little trailer packed to the rafters, ready for a weekend of fun at the Bergriver Resort camp. That old-school VW spirit means finding a way to make it work. It just goes to show you that even our beloved beach buggies can be proper workhorses when it comes to stocking the kuierspot! While the guys were probably still under a hood or talking about Baja Bugs, our amazing ‘Ladybugs’ found the true meaning of club camp relaxation! Here are six of our lovely ladies—Sandra, Sam, Michelle, Mickey, Yolande, and Coralie—making themselves very comfortable, soaking up the sun, and toasting to a fantastic weekend at the Bergriver Resort camp with freshly poured cocktails. This is the real kuierspot vibe, pure bliss and camaraderie! It’s not just about the VW classics; it’s about the incredible VW Family we’ve built! The Wild Buggers hit the road! Our lekker morning drive took our VW air-cooled vehicles straight to Kooperasie Stories in Simondium. Our first pitstop usually involves coffee, but this time, it was a meeting with a giant! Look at this massive, old-school car—it makes our Baja Bugs look like toys! It’s so big, we don’t even know what it is, but it was certainly a sight inside the industrial vintage shop. Always fun to mix our love for classic cars with other bits of history on our drives!Right next to the massive old car, we found this bizarre, three-wheeled contraption! It’s another great example of a wacky old-school machine that certainly got the VW Family talking. We specialize in four-wheeled fun with our beach buggies and VW air-cooled vehicles, but you’ve got to appreciate the engineering (or lack thereof) of this little guy. Every time we take our VW classics out, we find something new and weird to look at! What do you think this little speedster was used for?Forget the VW air-cooled vehicles for a minute—check out the original classic cars! We spotted this amazing, handmade vintage wooden ox wagon model at Kooperasie Stories. Talk about old-school VW! Okay, it’s not a VW classic, but it’s a testament to incredible craftsmanship and history. It just goes to show you that the Wild Buggers appreciate all forms of cool, vintage transport. It certainly looks a lot quieter than our convoy of beach buggies! After checking out the giant car and the wacky three-wheeler, we just had to take a moment to browse the rest of Kooperasie Stories in Simondium! It’s a goldmine of old-school bits and pieces. From vintage furniture to random bits of junk we definitely don’t need (but probably bought anyway), this is a great spot for the VW Family to stretch their legs and check out things that are almost as classic as our VW air-cooled vehicles. It’s all part of the fun of a Wild Buggers drive! They said it was a quick pitstop… they lied! The Wild Buggers were absolutely loving the vintage vibe at Kooperasie Stories. Here’s a shot of the VW Family scattered among the relics, probably looking for a rusty sign or a random old-school part that might fit their beach buggy (it won’t). We might drive VW air-cooled vehicles, but we appreciate anything classic! It’s all part of the fun of a lekker drive away from the kuierspot! And just when you thought the vintage hunting was over! Outside the shop, waiting patiently, was this absolutely ancient-looking beast of a car. We have no idea what it is, but look at the lines on that thing! It’s another brilliant piece of motoring history that caught the eye of the VW Family crew. It makes our VW air-cooled vehicles look positively futuristic! Whether it’s a Baja Bug or this beauty, the Wild Buggers appreciate all kinds of classic cars—especially the ones that leave us scratching our heads!Shopping is done, heads have been scratched over the strange three-wheeler, and the wallets are lighter! Here’s the President, Anton, and Chris locking up the joint—it’s time to fire up those air-cooled VWs and hit the open road again. Nothing beats the sight of two awesome beach buggies ready to roll! Shrek and Zara’s Buggy are leading the charge. Our VW classics are built for the drive, not the mall, so let’s get those engines roaring! The VW Family is back on the move! The Wild Buggers are back in formation and burning up the beautiful roads! It was a legendary line-up: Anthony, Brent, Rhoodie, Chris, Anton Horne, Jacques, and yours truly (Anton K), making a joyful noise with our air-cooled VWs. Look at all these fantastic beach buggies and VW classics just soaking up the sun and the scenery! This is the sound and sight of the VW Family having the time of their lives—no better way to spend a Saturday than behind the wheel of an old-school VW!Just look at that beautiful line of VW classics filling up the mirrors! Every one of these beach buggies has a story, and right now they’re making a great new one on the open road. That’s Anthony, Brent, Rhoodie, Chris, Anton Horne, Jacques, and yours truly, the President, leading the charge! This is the sound and sight that the Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club lives for—nothing beats a weekend where the VW Family gets to open up those old-school VW engines and enjoy the view!We tried to put the cameras away, we really did, but when you’ve got a view like this, how can you not take another photo? Look at those VW classics eating up the road! This is our glorious line-up of beach buggies and old-school VWs on the move, making all the right noises and looking sharp. It’s a perfect slice of pure, uncomplicated VW Family fun. This is why the Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club exists—for moments like this, far away from the couch and deep into the adventure! This is what it’s all about! The Wild Buggers convoy in full swing, turning the beautiful scenic roads into our personal playground! Nick, Clive, Anthony, Brent, Rhoodie, Chris, Anton, Jacques, and yours truly, all lined up, engines humming, and the wind in our hair. Every single one of these VW air-cooled vehicles was just soaking up the views. From Baja Bugs to VW Beetles dressed as buggies, this is the true spirit of the VW Family on the move. Nothing beats a drive with your mates and a bunch of old-school VWs!The Wild Buggers had to pause their epic drive for a crucial mission: restocking the weekend supplies! So we pulled our VW air-cooled vehicles over in Paarl and hit the shops. Here we are inside an outdoor store, probably debating the pros and cons of different braai tongs or arguing over which cooler box is the most old-school. The VW Family is always looking for an excuse for a kuierspot chat, even in the middle of a shopping centre! Hope no one bought a tent—we’ve got enough motorhomes! You can take the Wild Buggers out of the kuierspot, but you can’t take the kuierspot out of the Wild Buggers! While the rest of the crew were busy hunting for braai tongs in Paarl, this lot immediately migrated back to the parking lot. You can bet they were already talking about Baja Bugs, debating Rhoodie’s water-cooled motor, or just enjoying the sight of their old-school VWs. The only thing better than driving these VW classics is standing next to them and having a good chat with the VW Family! The shopping trip is taking forever, but who cares when you’ve got this kind of company? Every minute spent waiting is another minute for a laugh and a serious debate about the best engine for a Baja Bug! Our VW classics are the ultimate social magnet. This is what the VW Family is all about—turning a boring parking lot wait into a mini-kuierspot. Soon we’ll fire up those old-school VWs again, but until then, the chat is better than the shops!Yep, still here! Turns out shopping for supplies is serious business, but that just means more time for the rest of the Wild Buggers to talk nonsense and debate VW air-cooled vehicles. Whether it’s the latest modification to a Baja Bug or an epic campfire story, the conversation never stops. This is the simple joy of the VW Family—turning a necessary stop into another perfect social moment around our VW classics! The Wild Buggers are back from their lekker drive, and what do we find? The ‘Ladybugs’ are at it again! Sandra, Sam, Michelle, Mickey, Yolande, and Linda have apparently decided that our VW air-cooled vehicles aren’t colourful enough, so now we have a massive balloon operation at the kuierspot! We have no idea what they were planning—maybe they were upgrading Shrek or The Hornet? This is what happens when you leave the VW Family to their own devices at the club camp! After all the beach buggy driving and mysterious balloon activities, some Wild Buggers found their ultimate relaxation zone! Here’s Thys and his wife, perfectly content in their camping chairs right next to the river, with a gentle campfire flickering away. This is what club camp life is all about—peaceful moments, great company (even if it’s just the two of you), and the beauty of the Bergriver Resort. No air-cooled VWs in sight, just pure VW Family zen!Forget the beach buggies and the VW air-cooled vehicles for a minute—this is the real engineering challenge of the weekend! We were trying to figure out what our awesome ‘Ladybugs’ were up to with all those balloons, and now we know: they were giving themselves some seriously inflated assets! Sandra, Sam, Michelle, Mickey, Yolande, and Linda absolutely won the weekend for pure, spontaneous humour. This is what the VW Family does when the sun is out and the kuierspot is calling. Who needs VW classics when you can rock a balloon bustle? They’re lined up, they’re inflated, and they’re issuing a challenge! After all the driving, braaiing, and talking about VW classics, the ‘Ladybugs’ decided the men needed a physical challenge. Here are our fierce competitors (Sandra, Sam, Michelle, Mickey, Yolande, and Linda) all lined up, balloons blazing, calling the men over! The VW Family is never short on entertainment. Whatever this game is, it looks absolutely ridiculous and hilarious, which is exactly how the Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club likes to end a perfect day at the kuierspot!Wait, what is happening now?! Just when the men thought they could take a break, the ‘Ladybugs’ declared war and started blowing up more balloons! Sandra, Sam, Michelle, Mickey, Yolande, Ellie and Linda are clearly not messing around—this game just went from zero to total kuierspot madness. They’ve proven that the VW Family has unlimited reserves of energy, even after a long drive in their VW air-cooled vehicles! We can only guess what new rules these queens of the club camp are dreaming up!Forget horsepower, this is about high-risk footwear! The mysterious Ladybugs’ mission is complete: all the Wild Buggers men now have a target tied to their ankles! Look at Anthony, Brent, Rhoodie, Chris, Anton, and Jacques all lined up, looking both terrified and thrilled at the prospect of a chaotic, balloon-popping battle. The VW Family is never boring! This is the ultimate end to a perfect club camp at the Bergriver Resort—the engines are off, but the fun is absolutely flat-out. Who needs VW classics when you’ve got this kind of old-school VW fun?The dust has settled, the balloons have all gone pop, and we have a champion! Here’s Sam giving Anthony his well-deserved prize for winning the fiercely competitive leg balloon popping game! That man has fast feet and a deadly sense of timing, clearly! The Wild Buggers will turn anything into a competition, and the VW Family always celebrates a winner. Congratulations, Anthony! Now, go use those prize funds to buy a proper air-cooled VW spare part… or maybe just more braai wood for the next club camp! The VW Family is always talking! Here’s Yolande, Anthony, Clive, and Rhoodie, taking a well-deserved break at the table for a good chinwag. You can bet the conversation was moving from Baja Bugs and VW air-cooled vehicles to the proper technique for making potjiekos, or maybe even rehashing the details of the Great Leg Balloon Brawl! These are the quiet, quality moments that make a club camp so great. It’s all part of the fun of being a Wild Bugger! The beach buggies are parked, the drive is done, the balloons have all popped, and the only thing left to do is relax! Here’s the entire VW Family crew (or most of them!) doing exactly what you’re supposed to do at a club camp: sitting back on the lawn, soaking up the sun, and enjoying some classic Wild Buggers chat. This is the simple, pure joy of being around your friends and your VW classics. The kuierspot spirit lives in the camping chair! The beach buggies are quiet, the balloons have popped, and now it’s time for the analysis! Here we are, chilling at the table on the stoep, reviewing the weekend’s events: the epic drive, Rhoodie’s water-cooled engine, and perhaps most importantly, who was the worst at the Leg Balloon Brawl. The VW Family knows how to turn a simple porch chat into a proper kuierspot discussion. It’s all part of the laid-back, old-school VW spirit that makes the Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club so much fun! They planned the games, they inflated the targets, and now, they deserve the salute! Here are our amazing ‘Ladybugs’—Sandra, Sam, Michelle, Mickey and Yolande raising a glass and saying a big cheers to a completely unforgettable weekend! From the beach buggies and VW classics to the bum balloon brawl, they brought the fun, the laughs, and the pure old-school VW spirit to the Bergriver Resort camp. The VW Family is truly lucky to have these legends making every kuierspot a party!Mickey mentioned her Baja Bug, Dark Side, was acting up and didn’t want to idle properly. Next thing you know, when she popped back to her tent, this is the sight that greeted her! Nick and Clive, two absolute legends of the VW Family, were already on the job, tinkering away to sort out the problem. This is the ultimate example of the Wild Buggers spirit: see a problem with an air-cooled VW, and you fix it, no questions asked! That’s the loyalty you get with these old-school VW enthusiasts. Thanks, guys, for getting Dark Side purring like a kitten again! You know you’re a true Wild Bugger when even the monuments try to stop your fun! We had a brilliant idea for a sundowner evening drive, heading straight for the stunning Taal Monument. But alas! The gates were closed. Here’s Rhoodie in his blue Kango and Jacques in his yellow Beamish performing the classic ‘we tried’ old-school VW maneuver. At least the drive there was awesome! No view, but great company and the fun sound of our VW air-cooled vehicles rumbling away. Next time, monument, next time!Forget those closed gates—the Wild Buggers found a better plan! When one door closes, you find a gravel road! Here are our VW air-cooled vehicles eating dust and having an absolute blast on the way up to the Paarlberg picnic spot for a well-deserved sundowner. This is what these beach buggies and Baja Bugs were built for! The sound of those old-school VWs echoing across the hill is the best kind of music. It’s the perfect end to a day of serious VW Family fun!Forget the destination—when the road looks this good, the journey is the only prize! This is the kind of scenic road that makes every Wild Bugger remember why they love their VW air-cooled vehicles. Windows down, wind in the face, and the rumble of those old-school VWs echoing across the landscape. This is the simple, honest fun that the VW Family lives for. What a spectacular end to an amazing drive! You’ve got to be kidding us! Just when we thought we found the perfect sundowner spot up Paarlberg via the epic gravel road, we were met with another set of closed gates! Here are Sandra and Nick in 53, looking slightly defeated (but mostly amused), as the gatekeeper delivers the bad news: ‘Sorry, too late!’ You just can’t make this stuff up with the Wild Buggers! But did that stop us? Absolutely not! The VW Family just turned our VW air-cooled vehicles around and said, ‘No problem, more gravel road for us!’ The adventure never truly ends with old-school VWs!The Wild Buggers don’t need monuments! After the gate drama, we found a much better sundowner stop—a beautiful waterfall right next to the road! We had to pull our VW air-cooled vehicles over for a quick chat and to just soak up the view. No closed gates, just water, rocks, and the entire VW Family having a blast. This is the simple, honest reward for driving an old-school VW—always finding the best spots, even when we aren’t looking! What a beautiful end to a truly epic drive!Forget those closed gates—when you drive an old-school VW, the road rewards you! We spontaneously pulled over our VW air-cooled vehicles for this absolute jackpot of a view. No monument, just pure, flowing water and a perfectly serene spot to take a break from the dust. This is the Wild Buggers way: the adventure is always better than the plan! What a beautiful sight to share with the VW Family after an epic drive!Forget the Taal Monument and the Paarlberg gatekeepers! The Wild Buggers refused to be denied, and look at the reward! This, ladies and gentlemen, is the absolute, hands-down, perfect spot for our sundowner. It wasn’t on the map, but it’s pure gold. Our VW air-cooled vehicles did the job, and the VW Family is celebrating a truly epic drive and a fantastic club camp weekend. Every time those gates closed, the view got better! Cheers to the old-school VW spirit! This is the money shot! After a weekend of beach buggies, air-cooled VWs, engine repairs, and balloon brawls, this is the perfect payoff: sitting on Paarlberg, chatting away, and soaking up the last of the sun. Just look at the pure joy on those faces! It was an absolute jol! The VW Family knows how to turn a drive into an epic party. The kuierspot moved, but the spirit of the Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club never missed a beat! The beach buggies are parked, the sun is setting, and the entire VW Family is gathered in the ultimate kuierspot circle of friendship. Look at this crowd! After all the driving, gate drama, and balloon madness, there’s nothing better than standing here, chatting away, and soaking up the last of the day’s light. It was an absolute jol! This is the core of the Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club—great friends and great old-school VW spirit! The beach buggies are cool, the sun is down, but the Wild Buggers are staging a peaceful protest! This place is just too beautiful, and the chat is too good—so we decided we’re not going yet. Look at the crew, soaking up every last second of this spectacular view and laughing away. It’s the ultimate feeling of club camp success: the fun is so epic you can’t bear to leave. We might love our VW air-cooled vehicles, but we love the company even more! The kuierspot is wherever the VW Family is gathered!Okay, President’s orders: one final, mandatory five minutes of spectacular view and epic chat before we fire up those old-school VWs and head back! This is the look of a crew that knows how to make every second count. From the beach buggies to the kuierspot, this entire weekend was pure gold. Thanks for the views, Paarlberg! The Wild Buggers Beach Buggy Club will be back! The sun has set on our epic day, the beach buggies are quiet, and the hunger is real! The Wild Buggers know that no club camp is complete without a massive braai, and look what the ‘Ladybugs’ have conjured up: trays of perfectly prepared braaibroodjies! After conquering the Leg Balloon Brawl, they moved straight into culinary excellence. This is the ultimate comfort food for the VW Family after a day of old-school VW adventures. Thanks, ladies, for handling the most important job at the kuierspot! The drive is done, the beach buggies are parked, and now the real work begins: The Braai! Look at that feast, all laid out and ready for the roosters! The VW Family has got to refuel after a day of old-school VW adventures, gate dramas, and bum balloon battles. It’s time to stop admiring the VW classics and start appreciating the carnivorous bounty! Get those grids packed, boys—we need fire, we need smoke, and we need meat! The final kuierspot is calling!Forget the capacity of a VW air-cooled vehicle engine; this is the load we’re truly proud of! The rooster is stacked, absolutely groaning under the weight of pork chops, steak, sosaties, and lamb. This magnificent bounty is the reward for a day of hard beach buggy driving and hilarious club camp adventures. The fire is perfect, the braaibroodjies are waiting, and the VW Family is hungry! It’s time for the final, legendary kuierspot! The meat is loaded, but it’s not ready yet! Here are Brent and Anton H, the true braai masters of the Wild Buggers, adding their secret blend of spices to the mighty rooster. Look at that focus! Every chop, every steak, every sosatie getting the VIP treatment before it hits the coals. This is serious business for the VW Family after a day of old-school VW adventures. Those VW air-cooled vehicles might be fast, but this braai is a slow-cooked masterpiece in the making! Get ready for a flavour explosion! The moment of truth! The meat is officially on the fire, sizzling away like a dozen angry VW air-cooled vehicles! Here are Rhoodie, Brent, and Anton H, standing guard over the rooster, making sure every pork chop, steak, and sosatie reaches perfection. You do not mess with the fire masters! After a day of beach buggy thrills, this kuierspot is about to serve up a legendary feast. This is the simple perfection of the VW Family! After the mighty braai and all that balloon-popping chaos, what better way to wind down than with a classic campfire treat? Here are Michelle and Coralie, carefully (or maybe not so carefully!) toasting marshmallows over the glowing embers. This is the simple, sweet magic of the kuierspot! Even the toughest Wild Buggers can’t resist a perfectly golden marshmallow. It’s all part of the VW Family fun at the club camp—making sweet memories, one sticky marshmallow at a time! The morning after the braai, the Leg Balloon Brawl, and all the beach buggy driving! Look at this club camp scene: breakfast is set, the VW Family is stirring, and the plates are ready for action. But notice the nervous energy? That’s because the coffee is not ready yet! A Wild Bugger without coffee is like an air-cooled VW without spark plugs. This is the ultimate test of patience at the kuierspot—we’re fueled by VW classics and laughter, but we still need that caffeine!Okay ouens! The wait is over, the coffee is brewing, and breakfast is officially served! After a night of legendary braai, sticky marshmallows, and the epic Leg Balloon Brawl, the VW Family needed some serious refuelling.
